Recurring transactions

Set up upcoming payments and make Finie more intelligent.

expenseOS philosophy: If it happens on a loop, do not retype it.

Recurring transactions are a reality, not guesses. You tell the app what should happen (amount, account, due date, frequency). The app uses that plan for Upcoming Payments, Finie reminders, auto-posting on due day, and several forecasts — not only for showing a calendar.

💡 Logging the same rent or salary manually every month works for history, but forecasts cannot see your next payday or EMI unless you add it here. See Keep your data fresh.

Where to find it

You can open recurring management from several places:

  • Transactions (Trxcns in the bottom nav) — scroll to Upcoming PaymentsManage recurring →
  • HomeUpcoming Payments card → Manage recurring →
  • Desktop sidebar: Transactions → Recurring)

The recurring page has two sections:

  1. Your recurring templates — everything you have set up (edit or delete).
  2. Upcoming Payments — the next 30 days of dues from those templates.

Add a recurring transaction

  1. Open Manage recurring (paths above) or tap Add Recurring on that page.
  2. Choose Expense or Income.
  3. Fill in the form: - Merchant / payee — e.g. HDFC Home Loan, Netflix, Salary. - Amount — the usual charge or credit (₹). - Account — the bank account or card that pays or receives it. - Category — same parent/subcategory rules as a normal transaction. - Frequency — Daily, Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, or Yearly. - Next due date — the next time this should occur (required). - End date — optional; use for fixed-term EMIs or trials. - Note — optional; useful for loan details Finie may have auto-detected.
  4. Tap Create recurring.

After save, the template appears in your list and in Upcoming Payments on Home and Trxcns when the due date falls in the next 30 days.

Expense examples (debits)

  • Rent, society maintenance, utilities
  • Loan / card EMI (pick the account that pays the EMI, usually savings)
  • Subscriptions — Netflix, Spotify, cloud storage, gym
  • Insurance premiums, school fees, SIP (as an expense from your bank)

Income examples (credits)

  • Salary or primary paycheck (monthly)
  • Freelance retainer, rent received, dividend credits
  • Any fixed inflow on a schedule

Use Income for salary even if you also log it as a one-off transaction sometimes — the recurring row is what powers forward planning.

What happens after you save

  • Reminders — Finie can message you 2 days and 1 day before a due date (see Proactive Finie nudges).
  • Auto-post — On the due date (morning IST), expenseOS can create the real transaction in your ledger so balances stay current without you re-entering the same row. You still own the books; edit or delete the posted transaction if something differed.
  • Upcoming Payments — Dashboard and Trxcns show the next 30 days.
  • Finie suggestions — When Finie spots a repeating pattern in your history, it may propose a recurring template in chat. Confirm there if it looks right.

Transfers between your own accounts are not auto-posted from recurring templates — log those with Move money (transfers).

Why recurring helps forecasts and insights

Planned payments are first-class inputs across the app:

  • Machine Learning cashflow outlook — overlays known salary, rent, and EMIs on the statistical baseline so the projected balance curve reflects real due dates.
  • Bill Failure Risk — projects whether selected accounts can cover upcoming expense recurring items (and considers income recurring too).
  • Credit Card Equaliser — uses recurring income and debits in the disposable-income pool for the card cycle.
  • Goal completion forecast — Monte Carlo sampling uses your history; recurring income/expense makes near-term cashflow more realistic.

Forecasts still need enough logged transaction history (typically a few weeks or months). Recurring does not replace logging spends — it tells the model what is already scheduled.

Editing or deleting a recurring transaction

  • Edit — Change amount, frequency, next due date, category, or note. Type and account are fixed after creation (delete and re-add if you picked the wrong account).
  • Delete — Stops future reminders and removes the template from projections. Already posted transactions stay in your ledger.

Good habits

  • Set next due date to the upcoming occurrence, not a date months ago.
  • Add salary as income recurring and EMI/rent as expense recurring on the paying account.
  • Refresh amounts when a bill changes (Netflix price hike, new EMI amount).
  • Pair with Quick templates for small daily spends that are not on a fixed calendar (chai, canteen).
